Stolen cars converted to bombs?

Add car thieves to the list of people who may be supporting terrorism. According to this article in the Boston Globe, the FBI's counterterrorism unit is looking into reports that some of the vehicles used in recent car bombings in Middle Eastern countries, including Iraq. There is no evidence yet that the cars are being stolen specifically for use in car bombings, but Steven Emerson, of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, says, "Some of the proceeds [from auto theft] are going to terrorists."

Does it seem bizarre to you that it's cheaper to steal a car in the US and ship it halfway around the world than to steal a car in Iraq? WTF?

It seems downright weird. The article says that unnamed experts think insurgents in Iraq favor US vehicles because they blend in more easily with convoys, but I don't know about that. Maybe with civilian convoys, but I know if I was in a military convoy and saw a vehicle that wasn't done up in camoflage trying to slip in line, I'd be prone to shooting first and asking questions later.

Well if it comes with a full tank of gas that should cover the cost of shipping it.

With SUV's getting bigger all the time Im suprised they arent mistaken for army tanks more often.

And a Toyota Prius attempting to hop sand dunes in Iraq is something Id pay to see.

Car theft is just next on the list of crimes they are trying to link to terrorism so they have an excuse to further expand the powers of the enforcement oops I mean investigation branches of the US dictatorship.
